How Did you Get That Name?

Mo asked how I got the name MommaDish on one of her blogs. I thought I'd tell you all, but you have to tell me how you got your screen name, too!

My last name is Dishman, so when the boys were playing sports, they always got called "Dish" by their coaches. In school, they were a grade apart so the school coach started calling them "Dish" and "Little Dish." The principal always called them that, too. When my daughter started school, he decided to call her "Little Little Dish." (He's just creative that way!)

One day we all walked in to school together, and he greeted the boys ("Hi Dish, Little Dish.. here's Little Little Dish...") and then he realized I was there too and said "... and here comes Momma Dish." I thought it was cute! So I use it for my email and screen names.

So how did you get your name?

  1. How cool! When I filled out the form for Multiply I kept trying to come up with a name. A song was running through my head so I took a part of that and used it. Only one person has ever asked me what my name meant. So here's a link to tell you a little about the album I penned my name from.

  2. Thats cute. Well I started getting into mermaids. I used to be Gypsyheart cuz I have a gypsy in my heart. But mermaids became an important symbol to me of my divorce. I read a book about reclaiming your mermaids tail......the quest to find the real you that gets buried with kids and marriage.

And so I tried to get a mermaid nick and they were all taken......found other words that mean that........and seanymph was one. It wasnt taken. And so Im that plus some numbers at the end depending on what site. Some require it and sometimes even this nick was taken. So most times Im seanymph3 or seanymph777 (cuz triple 7s are lucky for me.)

  4. That sounds like a great book about the mermaid's tail- what is the title? I have always wanted to be a mermaid.... swim with the dolphins.... just live in the water!

  5. It truly is his greatest album! I've seen Yes a few times, they are so talented! (-:

  6. Yes they are! Ha! I thought Trevor Rabin looked sick though- too skinny, with that Steven Tyler look!

  7. Lol Too funny. Most of the Yes shows I saw were before Trevor, when Steve Howe was still with them.

  8. LOL that's a great nickname too!!!

I've played fantasy baseball for years, in fact this year will be my 20th season. My team name forever has been the Bucharest Impalers. I was inspired at the time by the movie Bram Stoker's Dracula. So long before I discovered other fun yahoo things to do, like chat, I created an email of bucharest_impalers. That was also my name on 360. When I migrated to Multiply, I shortened it to just Buch, and added the year I was born, '68

  9. GhostRider131...Got it from my team members in Vietnam...My ability to appear and disappear quickly. I was very fast and sort of hyper I guess you would say. When I had to, I was somewhat super fast on the move....so, there you go....Bill

  10. You know Momma , Ive looked for that book for yrs since I first found it at the library. I cant find it or anything like it. Its like it was just written for me. It was something about reclaiming the mermaids tail. I remember that. And it talked about how society changes women once they marry. That sexy wild woman they were before, the man falls in love with but then doesnt like that after because thats not how wives and mommas act. It made sense. And so it was about finding yourself again because that mermaids tail was the real you deep inside, that your taught to hide.

  13. I've had a variety of names throughout my online time. I was orginally Brytesky pronounced bright sky. Don't remember how I got that one. Then I went on a quest and became moonlit silverdove. I had some bad mojo connected to that name and wanted it gone. So I went on another vision quest. Knowing this was my last shot and I knew it had to have Silver in it. I just felt connected to it. One day it came to me. Silver Rain. I don't know why Rain other then it feels right.

  14. How's this for strange: I had at least 5 other Karen's in my grammar school class that followed me through Jr. High, and I really hated it. I thought my middle name was so much nicer and more unique...my uncle told me the story about how I got my middle name just a couple years ago....well it turned out I was named after my husband Bill's ex-wife's Aunt!! Yup!! My dad worked with Bill's ex's Uncle Doug...they were good friends at work and off times too, and Dad named me after Doug's wife Jeanette. I never thought I'd marry someone that knew her or was related to her!!!!! Just shows you God knows better and can do ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!

  15. Wow Karen, talk about a small world! That is a neat story, though!

  16. This is great! I've always wondered about MommaDish...I thought it had something to do with you sharing your love of God and "dishing" on it in your Bible Study blogs!

As for lightkeeper...same thing, I thought you were just a big Jesus fan! LOL

Samadri...has been my pen name since I wrote for the school newspaper in high school. Its actually Sam Adri. My brother's best friend used to call me Sammy instead of Sandy, and Adri was short for my friend's pen name Adrienne. We used to write funny stories together when bored in Home Ec, and since it was a joint effort, the "author's" name was always Sam Adri. Then, like I said, when I needed a pseudonym for the school paper's tongue-in-cheek column, I just used it.

  17. I never knew that Sandy! I knew you used Sam but not the rest. I'm so glad I asked this question- we're learning a lot here!

  18. I also collect lighthouses and moose. My love of moose got me the name mamoose from one of my much younger co-workers. She's my 'adopted ' daughter. Not for real, I mean.

My 30 years old son Jason is known to his friends ass Kep Kepler. I've been called a "Geek" or "Nerd" most of my days as well. I know computer so I'm called a computer geek. I know history and have been called a history geek. I know math and science and been called a math or physics geek. I have also been called "Doc". I have an earned doctorate degree. I have been called "preacher". I am an ordained Southern Baptist Minister with two masters degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, plus I am an ordained deacon. I have been called. Then I have been called some things I can't repeat. My favorite is the way am frequently introduced by my friends. They say, This is Jimmie. He is the nicest guy you will ever meet."

  20. Could it be "The Mermaid Chair" by Sue Monk Kidd? That was a great book, although from what you are describing, it sounds like it might be a different book.
I, too, would be interested in reading the one you've described.

  21. Mine is from a passage in Hebrews that our LORD gave me years ago when I was in high school - Hebrews 10:23 He who promised is faithful. He has promised to do everything He has said He will do. Even when things seem to be taking longer than I thought they would and I start to doubt, that's the verse I remember. Brings me back to being patient and trusting Him.

  23. Ebyjo= E B were my birth initials and my dad called me E B when I was about 2 months old. When I was in my teens, I added the Y for style... LOL Then Jo is part of my last name. My family calls me Eby all the time. My dad, cousins, Aunts and Uncles never call me by my first name, it is always Eby. :-)

  24. Now yours I had figured out! And I love the way your friends introduce you- you are one of the nice guys, Jimmie!

  25. I read that one... it doesn't sound like it to me either, but sometimes you can get something from a book that speaks to the place you are in life. Others don't read that because that isn't where they are.

    Where did bluefiredogg come from?

  26. That's what I thought!

This isn't boring... isn't it neat when our names give us nicknames?

  27. That explains the moose! When I worked at the furniture store, one room was a "hunting" theme and it had a moose head on the wall- made out of grapevine! I had a lot of fun with that moose- hung things like Christmas balls from his ears!

  28. mine isn't too hard...magic because everything is magic, and Kat is my name. Plus...the new agers like to spell magic "magick" (which I think is dumb) and it sorta fit. I had a friend on 360 whose name was MagicalKat (her name was Kat too) so she was MKat and I was plain Kat. She didn't migrate, so I took part of her name and all of mine!

My yahoo name was Sophiasmom...also obvious. My precious dog Sophia, and I was her mom! My sister is Rooksmom (Rookie was her dog), my niece Auggiesmom (you get the idea)...

  29. Afraid mine doesn't have a very interesting story attached to it. 'Melancholy' because I have problems with depression, and 'Specter' (ghost) because I like ghost stories. I thought of it one day and it sounded good to me so I took it as my main name for blogging. I've also been Melancholy Mad before but I like Melancholy Specter the best. I think it also has a gothic feel to it, that's why I used to have the gothic chick as my avatar. Think I may change back to that one one of these day. Been bored, need some change. Have you ever read my depressing poems? You said you wanted to know us better for the Eulogy thingies. http://melancholys-moods.blogspot.com/p/my-poems.html
