How Did you Get That Name?

Mo asked how I got the name MommaDish on one of her blogs. I thought I'd tell you all, but you have to tell me how you got your screen name, too!

My last name is Dishman, so when the boys were playing sports, they always got called "Dish" by their coaches. In school, they were a grade apart so the school coach started calling them "Dish" and "Little Dish." The principal always called them that, too. When my daughter started school, he decided to call her "Little Little Dish." (He's just creative that way!)

One day we all walked in to school together, and he greeted the boys ("Hi Dish, Little Dish.. here's Little Little Dish...") and then he realized I was there too and said "... and here comes Momma Dish." I thought it was cute! So I use it for my email and screen names.

So how did you get your name?

D is for....

Dai, Doc, Dave, and Dragonwind... the next victims in my quest to eulogize my friends!

Dai, I really hope I can meet you one day. You have opened up a whole new country and culture that I would never have known anything about. Nepal is certainly beautiful, but it also has its darker side- literally! I don't know how you survive without many of the basic amenities that I take for granted every day. But I think highly of you for starting two successful businesses in a foreign country! You amaze me with your dedication to family and friends. I'm glad you're my friend!

Doc, although you are not one of my closer friends I talk to every day, I look forward to your posts, usually with pictures! I envy your travels, too. Thanks for sharing what you see with your camera.

Dave, you're one of my newest friends and I"m enjoying getting to know you. Already, I know what a great photographer you are and how much fun you are to banter with. You think a lot like I do, because some of the things I think of to say are ones you've already commented. I hope you find that special someone who makes you write happy poetry again!

And Sam... probably the most unique person on my list! You make me think, and think deeply. I don't know if there is a subject that you bring up that doesn't make me go "hmmmm.." I hope you get your meds fixed and start feeling better. I also hope you get moved easily- I don't envy you that. I hate to move!!

Eulogies cont.... the Hunter, BBQ, and Baron, Bill, Blue

Arkie is unique to me- you love to joke around, but down inside is someone caring and fun. Maybe one day you'll be able to come over and clean my pool for real. Don't worry, I know you'll like it. I might even let you swim afterward!

Jamie, I haven't had the chance to get to know you well. You seem to be somewhat like me, and post only when the mood strikes. I guess that makes it harder for us to connect, but considering who our mutual friends are, I think I'd like you a lot!

And ZB- this is the hardest eulogy yet. I probably should have just culled you from the list, but I can't cut that last tie. I know you haven't been here for forever and have moved on in life, but just seeing the Baron on my list helps me remember the good times- the move here from 360 and how you made it much easier for us refugees, the parties by the pool, the costume parties, and just general fun that we all had being around you. I miss you and wish you well!

Bill, I love that you call me Jan (just because you can't remember the rest!) Thank you for suggesting we do the ornament exchange again this year. I know you have had a harder year but no one could tell it from your posts. You're amazing to take another chance on love. Pat is a lucky girl!

Blue, I'd love to sit down with you for about a week and just talk. You have been so many places and know so much. The spirituality that you have shows in every word you say. The shamanic work and your Native American culture makes you earthy and genuine and connected to the earth in a deep way. I'm envious of that.

Eulogies.... Kat's First

Kippy went to a memorial service and remarked on all the people who turned out for her friend. She thought that it would have been wonderful if her friend could have heard everything nice that people were saying about her. We should tell the people in our lives how much they mean to us now, while they can hear it. So, the eulogy blog is born. I'd like to do one for everyone on my list but I don't know if that will happen. So I thought maybe I could handle a paragraph here and there. When I looked at my friend's list, Kat came first...

Kat, when I met you on 360 it was like finding my long lost sister. There was some instant "click" that said "friend for life" almost from the beginning. From dipping in the chocolate fountain at Z's to taking dogs to the vet, we've been through a lot. One day I hope we can meet in person, but if we never do, it won't matter. You'll still be my sister, the one I worry about and wish on the stars for. I wish a better job for you, one where you can use those artistic talents to wow the world! I wish you could see yourself the way I see you- as the amazing, spiritual, open, loving, creative soul you are. My wish for you is that you find the positive in your life and feed off of it until nothing can stop you, not even the pain. I love you! ((HUGS))

Then there's Erin- Kat's son: I don't know you except through your mom, but that's a pretty good way to get to know someone. I know you have a heart for hurting animals, and good taste in girlfriends! And if mom is any judge (and I think she is) you do right by her, which is the best that anyone could ever say about a son.

Next on the list is Aayush- of the motorcycles in Nepal. I don't really know you but if you're a friend of Dai's (and NSC Kumar) then you're welcome in my online world. Thanks for taking care of things on the other side of the planet.

And I'm going to end with Ajax- you're a funny penguin but one of the only people on my list who really keeps me on my toes. You keep me aware of pop culture, and satire, and puns.. oh, and whether penguins have wings or flippers. I still say flippers!

This was fun! More tomorrow (I hope!)

Ten Thought Tuesday- the Unmotivated Edition

1. I'm lazy. I think it is the cold weather, but I just want to sit on the sofa with a book and a cup of hot tea.

2. My Christmas decorations are still up. And my excuse runs out on Thursday. They'll probably come down on Saturday.

3. There are so many things I want to do, and I have no motivation to get them done. How do you get motivation anyway? Does anyone have a trick, or something they do, to motivate you?

4. I've been reading blogs lately and I don't think I'm the only one in a funk. Maybe it is light deprivation, or the unusually cold weather we've had.

5. I need a new diet plan. I'm tired of counting calories but I have to count something! Points, fat grams, carbs... someone give me a good idea!

6. I also need to exercise (which could be the answer to #1, 3, and 4) but I'm unmotivated. Our new YMCA opens on Saturday, and I'm hoping that motivates me to get moving. My mom bought me a year's membership for Christmas.

7. That mean's I'm a founding member of Sally's Y! Which is pretty cool, considering you get your name on a plaque that hangs in the lobby. Probably along with 500 other people, but that's ok!

8. I need a project. Usually in the winter, I do something creative. I have made quilts, scarves, cross-stitch things... but I'm not motivated. I'd love to paint something.... if I could bring myself to get started.

9. I can't believe I motivated myself to write a blog. And I made it to #9- maybe there is hope for me yet!

10. I do want to go buy the game Quelf from Target. We had a blast playing that last weekend and I know my friends here would LOVE it!
