There really isn't anything that works. The stuff you can get at pet stores specifically for skunk helps more than anything. It is enzyme based, and only "helps". If the dog got a full-on blast, it's a long process.
We tried tomato juice, lemon and baking soda, Dawn dishwash...all the old standard "tries" and nothing worked. Even after months, on damp days, Pickle smelled like skunk. That's where she got her knickname "ole skunkhead".
Paws had a residual smell just from being in the vicinity of a skunk spray and the wind carried the oils onto his coat! Even THAT took a while to go away.
Hannah got the same....ran through where it was all ready sprayed...last week! We tried Dawn, vinegar and baking soda. It's better, but when damp she's still a stinker! Good luck! We gave Hannah 3 bathes in it!!
Tomato juice never works. My vet always suggested a combination of peroxide, baking soda and Dawn dishwashing liquid. Make it into a paste and spread it all over your dog. I'd let it sit for a few minutes then rinse.
It always worked fairly well with my dogs. My one used to get sprayed quite often!
Natures Miracle does make a de-skunker, but honestly, I've never heard any feedback from customers on it, so wouldn't suggest it!
Well, that stinks. Sorry, had to do it. I've never had that problem, even growing up out in the country, so I have no idea what would work for ya. Hopefully she don't stink for to long.
Fortunately I haven't found that out yet. Besides a mega bath I'm not sure what else would help.
ReplyDeleteTry washing the dog in tomato juice.

So, spend the money and get the enzyme stuff.
I don't think she took a shot. I smelled it around the house last night and she didn't smell like skunk at all. I think she rolled in it or something.
ReplyDeletethen it may be a whole lot easier!!
ReplyDeletePickle got hit directly 3 times in her life. So some dogs don't learn from bad mistakes.

ReplyDeletePoor Pickle's hair was so dry she looked like a porcupine.
