Home from the conference softball tournament championship game- we won 14-13 in 7 innings. The girl gets bragging rights for first place AND an undefeated season!
No kidding! And I didn't do much- but I did keep the official scorebook! And got the girls on the bench chatting and cheering so much they got the other team rattled.
Over the last several years, I was the "dug out mom", it was my job to make sure the kids batted in order, and the catcher had his gear on in time. Oh yeah, not to mention, keep law and order in my domain,(the dug out). The head coach we had really liked me in that position, he knew he didn't have to worry about things. So, he is able to focus on coaching. Everyone that does the least little things for the kids, is very appreciated, by the coach, even if he doesn't mention it.
Yes there is sometimes. The coach of the other team was very annoying at 3rd base. Talked and cheered and chatted all the time. She had us rattled the first inning, then I figured it out. If we were louder than her, she'd get rattled and so would her team. And it worked!
It's funny how you talk about the mental dynamic that coach added to the game. Baseball is such a mental game and learn how to mess with the other team's mind is one way to gain an advantage. It's something I have learned to do as I have entered into the "old man" stage of playing sports and I love it. It is not always the most Christlike thing to do, but it's fun!
You know Steve, now that you say it, we were nicer than the other coach. She was putting down our players. We were just building them up- we didn't say bad things about her team.
In a passive aggressive way- things like "you can hit that pitch- she isn't that fast" or "there are weak fielders out there, just hit it by them." And this from a school named "Grace"!!
Tell the Girl, job well done.
ReplyDeleteWell done on your part as well.

ReplyDeleteWonderful. They'll talk about this the remainder of their lives.

ReplyDeleteShe was actually saying bad things about your players? Wow! That is kind of stupid. It usually motivates the other team.
