Excitement Today

So much for nothing ever happening in a small town. Well, there is your usual gossip, but today the major Charlotte news stations are flying overhead. You see, I live on 3 acres that backs up to a 100 acre tract of empty land. A couple of years ago, the guy who owns the land turned it in to a stump dump. This afternoon, it caught on fire. Of course, with the drought going on here, it caught fast. 3 hours later it is still sending flames high into the sky. We can see the glow from my kitchen window.

Thank goodness both of my boys are firemen- one is actually somewhere between our house and the fire, watching that it doesn't jump the fire break they have made. So far, they haven't talked about evacuating, and I hope they don't. Right now they have it contained and the wind is not blowing.  We'll just watch from the windows and see what happens. (I took the picture above from out my kitchen window.)

  1. *sigh*

    Some people don't think.

It was very wise of you guys to put up a fire break. That should save you a lot of problems.

  2. I've been so afraid that would happen in the mountains here. Every thing's been so dry.
I have a lot of relatives in the fire dept back home in Maryland. Some work for the paid county fire departments, some are volunteers, and some are both. My brother was a battalion chief when he retired from the paid, and he always belonged to several volunteer companies. A few years back he was operated on for thyroid cancer and they told him afterwards to avoid being around a lot of smoke. I think not being able to be a firefighter any more hurt him more than having cancer ever did. The fire dept was his whole life.

  3. We're a family of firemen- my uncle was chief here for 40 years, my dad was a fireman, and now both my sons are. My oldest is a fireman in the National Guard, too. I actually took the junior training at 16- didn't do anything with it but it is good knowledge to have.

  5. This is exciting and scary at the same time. What a sight!! I just realized we're only about 2 hours apart...I live in Sumter, SC. Somehow when I saw Denver, my mind always went to Colorado. It was not until you said Charlotte...that I realized you are in NC!

  6. Firefighting is scary. God bless your sons and family. 30+ years ago I was deployed with the US Army to fight fires in southern California one time and to fight forest fires another. I felt safer getting shot at!

  7. That really sucks about the fire. Why some people don't think is beyond me.

Keep us up to date on this.

  8. holy moly Dish....I remember how dry it can get there especially in the flat lands around Charlotte. We didn't seem to have the fires so much in the mountains (that I recall) That is SCARY but a beautiful shot nonetheless. My whole family on my mother's side were firemen, chiefs, lieutentants and asst. chiefs so I grew up around firemen. Then I worked for a volunteer fireman in Hooterville, and the chief worked in the next office (so more firemen). Then here in NY, we were nextdoor to the city fire dept, and I saw firemen all day long. I wonder if this is a sign? lol...well, off topic here. I hope you remain safe. hugs

  9. Wow, that looks close! I hope the fire doesn't spread and is put out pretty quickly. That's great that your boys are firefighters - they can keep their mama safe!

  11. Well it is finally out! They got it totally covered in dirt- can still get a whiff of smoke every now and then, but go fire department! Great job!
