What is it?

I took this from two stories up this morning- the resolution is horrible because all I had was my cell phone on me. Those blocks are 16", so that tells you how huge this bird was. When it flew off, it had white stripes on the inside of its massive wingspan. All my searches point to a golden eagle, but they're not supposed to live in this part of the country. What else could it be?

  1. Are we talking about the bird or the squares around it?

  2. Not a vulture head- has a straighter beak.

  3. Could be... I have no idea. I think I'll go sit in the yard for a bit with the camera. I've seen him (her?) around before, so maybe he'll come back and I can get a better picture. Whatever it is, it is impressive!

  4. Larger birds are! I'd like to see the larger photo if you get one. You've got a bit of an avian mystery here!

  9. Wow did you find something here. This isn't an Eagle because of the shape of the head; plus the beak just doesn't look right either. But look aat the size of those feet??? I would say its more like a vulture type of bird.

  10. Oh yeah, it had huge feet! We went out after it flew away and the footprints it left were the size of Savannah's hand!

  11. Oh Abby, I think that is it! I was discounting the vulture thing because of the head- but this one looks right! Wow! I think he is living in my uncle's old barn- I've seen him come and go a couple of times in the past day. Wonder if we're going to have baby vultures?

  12. That would be cool, Janeen! Baby vultures. You know, up close, they aren't all that pretty when it comes to birds but they certainly have a purpose in this world. We have a lot of turkey vultures around here. I've never been able to see one up close but we have them circling a lot over the highway. (Road kill!) One of these days, I might get lucky to get a photo of one of them. You did a great job with using your cell phone.

  13. Thanks- this is an amazing bird. I never see it when I have the good camera outside! Maybe one day. I may have to re-think my stereotype of vultures!

I'm still on a quest to get a good picture....
